specific spice laws...

Not many are aware of the specific laws placed in the agriculture world when it comes to farming, cultivating, and growing crops or spices. Recently I was introduced to the agricultural term of GMO crops and how the specific DNA and nature of some crops are being modified in order to meet the needs and demands of the growing population of the world. Sometimes by altering genetic sequences and organisms we can produce more product of something, that looks better, tastes better, or even smells better. It is no surprise that turmeric, the natural golden spice, is another target of GMO crops in some areas. Because of certain circumstances involving lead poisoning in the US, the FDA and many other institution's and acts in India have been created and are involved in actively searching and checking transported turmeric before being placed in market to check lead levels. Turmeric folklore has been around as long as the root has been cultivated which dates back to very early traditional years. Just now, in society today, tarmac is finally being researched and brought to life through social media. However before all the articles and blogs about the health benefits of this amazing root, turmeric was considered a precious golden spice to many different cultures, and has been included in many rituals and daily activities based on stories and myths of good fortune and luck. As seen in the photo attached above, turmeric(haldi) is spread across the skin of this individual and is mixed often with rose water and it is said that whoever spreads this haldi paste on their skin or specifically their face, will find a good looking partner in their future. Now knowing the many healing and anti-aging properties of turmeric we see how this ritual is very ...

Turmeric farming first hand.....

When looking into what goes into farming turmeric and the manpower behind it, what better than to look to an organic farm known specifically for its association with the cultivation of turmeric. Kauai Organic Farms located in Hawaii is an organic farm owned by Phil and Linda Green off the North Shore of the Kauai island. This farm has been family owned for 10 years and the Green's employ 15 other local farmers to help them produce their many crops. Turmeric farming for this family is at its peak in the winter seasons, however there are many practices and processes they have picked up over the years to keep their crops top notch and fungus free in the off seasons. Because this is an organic farm, this family pays their employees to hand weed each of the plants instead of using herbicides that are harmful. They also cover the crops with other crops over the off season to prevent harm to the turmeric roots. All of the handwork to produce these locally organic grown crops are man pow...
